Condition: These books are in fair condition. Leather. Handsome three quarter black leather with red marbled boards adorned with golden rules. Covers show signs of wear with rubbing along edges and corners. Outer hinges worn and chipped. Volume I has been taped along rear outer hinge which is completely detached. Volume III hinges are in slightly better shape. Hinges are starting and are weak and boards will likely detach with use. Five raised bands along spine which is decorated in gilt. Spine is hand tooled and has handsome dentelles. Ex-libris has been affixed to olive end papers. Frontispiece portraits on both books has bled onto title page causing a residual image. The text block on both these books is wonderful. Clean and crisp as are all illustrations. Books contain several fold out maps and letters which are all intact.
This is a great reference for anyone interested in Mary, Queen of Scots. Sadly I am missing Volume II.
Books are heavy.
