Alfred J. Church was an avid scholar of the Greek language and its many classics. He translated many great works during his tenure at University College including Tacitus as well as edited Pliny’s Letters (Epistulae). Church also wrote a number of stories in English re-telling of classical tales and legends for young people (Stories from Virgil, Stories fromHomer, etc.) as well as much Latin and English verse.

Condition:  This wonderful children’s book is in very good condition. Gray, decorative boards with gilt which extends into the spine. Minimal rubbing and damage to cover and edges. Brown endpages are intact, hinges strong. Text block is crisp and clean. Book has an inscription in pencil dated 1891 on endpaper. Binding is square. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous in terra-cotta orange and black to resemble ancient pottery.
