I chose to present Albert Joseph Penot’s La Femme Chauve-Souris for its haunting elegance and unmistakable Gothic power. Painted in the early 20th century, Penot’s work often explored the boundary between beauty and unease, and this piece is among his most arresting—sensual, shadowed, and quietly unsettling.
The figure emerges from darkness with wings unfurled, neither fully human nor entirely creature, evoking themes of transformation, secrecy, and nocturnal freedom. Penot’s use of deep blacks and muted flesh tones gives the painting a sculptural presence, as though the subject has stepped forward from myth or dream. It is an image that belongs as much to symbolist reverie as to Gothic imagination.
