DESCRIPTION:
This volume presents a new translation of Cicero's "Dialogues de l'Orateur," a foundational work in classical rhetoric. The book delves into the art of oratory, exploring its principles, techniques, and the qualities necessary for an effective speaker. Cicero, a prominent Roman statesman, lawyer, and philosopher, is widely regarded as one of the greatest Latin prose stylists. His writings on rhetoric, philosophy, and politics have profoundly influenced Western thought and education, shaping ideas about civic duty, justice, and the power of language for centuries. This specific work is a cornerstone for understanding classical rhetorical theory and its application in ancient Roman society.

The "Dialogues de l'Orateur" is significant not only for its detailed exposition of rhetorical theory but also for its literary merit. It is presented in a dialogue format, allowing for a nuanced exploration of different perspectives on oratory, its ethical dimensions, and its role in public life. Cicero's ability to combine profound intellectual discourse with engaging narrative makes this work a timeless piece of classical literature. The discussions within the dialogues cover topics such as the ideal orator, the importance of general knowledge, the role of emotion in persuasion, and the structure of a speech, providing a comprehensive guide to the art of public speaking as understood in the Roman Republic.

FLASHBACK TO 1831 WHEN THIS BOOK WAS PUBLISHED:
When this book was published in 1831, Europe was ablaze with revolutionary fervor, as Belgium secured independence from the Netherlands and Poland launched a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful uprising against Russian rule; meanwhile, the world mourned the death of James Monroe and celebrated the birth of James Clerk Maxwell, whose future work would revolutionize physics. Victor Hugo’s *The Hunchback of Notre Dame* captivated Parisian readers, while across the Atlantic, Nat Turner's rebellion shook the foundations of slavery in the United States. This was a year of profound political upheaval and burgeoning intellectual curiosity, marked by both violent struggle and significant cultural achievements.
