A Deep Sea Idyll by Herbert James Draper, Greeting Card with Elegant Striped Gold Foil Envelope, 1 Card/Envelope
Send your best wishes, thoughts, and love with this elegant greeting card featuring a mermaid by Herbert James Draper. A Deep Sea Idyll is a fine example of Herbert James Draper's fascination with the alluring subject of mermaids and water nymphs. Despite not having a fish tail, the maiden belongs to the genre of mermaid subjects that figures so prominently in Victorian art. The painting loosely combines themes from two sources: Ancient Greek mythology in which the sculptor Pygmalion fell in love with Galatea, and Hans Christian Anderson's tale, The Little Mermaid, published in April 1837.
Born in London in 1864, Draper studied at the St John's Wood Art School before entering the Royal Academy Schools at the age of twenty. There he was taught by all the leading Academicians of the day and won the respect of the President, Sir Frederic Leighton, who did much to guide his early progress. Five years later, he won the Gold Medal and a traveling scholarship, which enabled him to pursue his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris and Rome. He exhibited at the RA from 1887, his subject pictures often inspired by the English poets and having a marked tendency to marine and nautical themes.
