You are bidding on a very early, rare, gold stamped leather book dating back to 1820. It is part of a two volume set, but this is VOLUME 2 only.
Jean-Nicolas Bouilly (24 January 1763 - 14 April 1842) was a French playwright, librettist, children's writer, and politician of the French Revolution. He is best known for writing a libretto, supposedly based on a true story, about a woman who disguises herself as a man to rescue her husband from prison, which formed the basis of Beethoven's opera Fidelio as well as a number of other operas.
Condition: This book is in fair condition for its age. Leather cover is scuffed, spine is missing, corners are bumped, edges are frayed. Hinges are cracked. Gilt page edges. Bears an inscription on the inside "American Legation, Bern, Switzerland" with a number. Some slight foxing is visible on some pages.
This is a piece of history. Happy Bidding.
