John Gay (1685-1732) was an English poet and playwright, still remembered for The Beggar's Opera. He was born to an aristocratic but impoverished family, which made him dependent on the generosity of patrons. His Fables were originally intended for a young, courtly, or aristocratic audience as a way to relate life lessons and morals through fun stories. There are a total of 51 fables in the book and 70 plates, 12 of which were engraved by Blake. They illustrate his skill as an engraver.
